I love Hawaiian music, especially slack key guitar. These are videos featuring slack key, mostly my own performances but a few special guests as well. Mahalo for visiting.
Kipahulu - Slack Key Improv
This gorgeous song, a fairly recent composition that quickly became a standard, tells of the beauty and fame of this area on the southeast side of Maui. Kipahulu is also the site of the "love snatching wind" that is the subject of another classic Hawaiian song, "Ka Makani Ka`ili Aloha." Since I recorded a clip of that song recently this one seems like a natural follow up.

Na Pua Lei `Ilima - Led and Fran at the Lake
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.День назад
The `ilima flower is a tiny delicate one, hard to find and precious. It is the flower of O`ahu so songs about the `ilima are likely to celebrate the island and its children. As it happens there are two songs of the same name and both do celebrate and honor O`ahu. The older song was composed by John K. Almeida, one of Hawai`is most prolific composers. You can find the lyrics and a translation he...
Lei Ko`ele - A song for the island of Lana`i
Просмотров 1 тыс.14 дней назад
The Reverend Dennis Kamakahi wrote love songs, rascal songs, songs honoring Hawaiian royalty. But many of his most beloved songs are a continuation of the Hawaiian tradition of "mele pana" - songs honoring a particular place. The little island of Lana`i is honored in this song that names a number of locations there. We got up with the dawn and headed to He`eia State Park to take advantage of th...
Ka Makani Ka`ili Aloha (Drop C Slack Key)
Просмотров 805Месяц назад
A song of love lost and recovered from the early days of the 20th century, "Ka Makani Ka`ili Aloha was composed by Matthew Kane. It has become one of the classics of the Hawaiian music repertoire, with great versions by Gabby Pahinui, his son Cyril, by Ledward both solo and with Hui Ohana, and by Led's mom, Tina Kaapana, among many many others. My arrangement is certainly influenced most by Led...
"E Maliu Mai" Slack Key

"Auntie" Irmgard Kealiiwahinealohanohokahaopuamana Farden Aluli was a prolific composer, leader of the family band Pua Mana that carries on today in the third generation, and one of the key figures in Hawaiian music. She wrote "E Maliu Mai" as a wedding song but its sweet melody and interesting chord progression has made it a standard for all occasions. We're back in beautiful Kailua, O`ahu and...
He Wahine U`i - Duet with Led Kaapana
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
This sweet old song was composed by John K. Almeida, singing the praises of various flowers he associated with various ladies. Over the years it has been recorded by many prominent artists and groups, perhaps the iconic version is the lively track by the Gabby Band. Led and I had a lot of fun trying different tempos and arrangements while he was visiting here in Walnut Creek. We set up in the B...
Ka Lae `O Ka`ena - Ka`ena Point

This traditional song tells of a love affair between a local boy and a fair-skinned visitor. Did their love flourish or did she slip away? The song leaves us wondering. This instrumental version leaves us without the lyrics of the English language chorus that was added by Eddie Kamae when he performed the song with the Sons of Hawai`i. I arranged the piece in taropatch open G tuning (D G D G B ...
Kanaka Waiwai - Ledward and his Autoharp
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.10 месяцев назад
The session at Led's garage back in September yielded several lovely clips, this is sadly the last of the three featuring Ledward and his wonderful d'Aigle autoharp. Without any planning on my part, it turned out that the three autoharp clips were three of the first four songs on Led's autoharp CD, "Jus' Cruzin'." "Kanaka Waiwai" is one of John Almeida's many compositions and has become a class...
Sanoe with Led Kaapana and his d'Aigle autoharp
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.11 месяцев назад
My session with Led at his garage resulted in the recording of three songs featuring his new d'Aigle autoharp. These songs purely by accident just happened to be the same three songs that opened his "Jus' Crusin'" CD that featured his autoharp stylings. This is the second of the three recordings, the Lili`uokalani classic, "Sanoe." This lovely piece is one we have recorded before as a guitar du...
Kalapawai Swing (Take 3)

We stay with friends in one of the sweetest places possible, just down the street from the Kalapawai Market, where Kailua Road finally stops changing names and ends, where Kalaheo Ave picks up the slack and changes names to Lihiwai Road for the trip past Kailua Beach Park and on into Lanikai. It's a busy little junction with the special added traffic of folks towing kayaks from the nearby renta...
He Aloha No O Honolulu with Led Kaapana on Autoharp!!
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Led Kaapana was introduced to the autoharp by one of his uncles in his formative years in the village of Kalapana. The autoharp was one of the instruments played by Queen Liliu`okalani but I'll bet she didn't get as much out of it as Led does (grin). Led has recorded a whole CD of autoharp arrangements, the charming "Jus' Cruzin'." One of the songs on Led's "Jus' Crusin'" CD is the classic "He ...

When I learned that today, August 26, 2023 is World Play Music On The Porch Day I immediately set up the gear to shoot a clip. Since we're in Kailua, O`ahu Hawai`i the porch is called a lanai but it still qualifies as a porch in my opinion. #playmusicontheporchday The song I chose is one of the most classic slack key pieces, a medley originally recorded by Leonard Kwan. Most people call the pie...
Green Rose Hula with Led Kaapana
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.Год назад
There are lots of reasons we love visiting Hawai`i - the beaches, the food, the friends, the music all contribute. When we connect up with Led Kaapana and his wife we get to enjoy food, friends and music all at the same time. The sweet breeze that blows across Enchanted Lake brings them over often and I've been trying to capture a new video with Led. I finally managed to shoot a clip with accep...
Rose Medley - Three Songs by John K. Almeida
Просмотров 682Год назад
John K. Almeida composed literally hundreds of songs and many of them are named for flowers. I fell in love with "Green Rose Hula" the first time I heard it and have played various arrangements for years. Back in 2017 I started working on a "Flowers Medley" that would include "Green Rose" and some other Almeida classics, but the project mostly resided on the back burner. Then last year as I was...
Lanikai Slack - A Solo Version
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
Time really does fly when you're an old fogey like me, it's hard to believe that the original "Lanikai Slack" was composed, played, and recorded eight years ago. We were enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Kailua Beach Park and naturally we brought guitars. Ledward fired up his old Martin 000-16 and this lovely collection of notes poured out, he was making up a new slack key tune on the fly....

"Nani Ko`olau" - Nahenahe Slack Key with Led Kaapana
What an achingly beautiful tune by one of the true masters.
I've been listening to the Slack Key Masters sets for several years, but recently began listening to your duets with Led. Truly the soundtrack to heaven, especially with the scenery. The music is wonderful. Do y'all still play together? THANK YOU for the music.
Thanks for taking a moment to comment. Those slack key masters CDs are a treasure, aren't they? I'm flattered that you mention our stuff in the same sentence. Led and I play together whenever we're in the same area. We've managed to put together two clips this year while we are visiting Hawai`i and I hope to capture another one or two. Then he will visit California next month and we'll try to get some tunes down then. I have a playlist of the stuff we've done together: ruclips.net/p/PLKRxWcC_Lftc7G4ByRpjNm79hjuZ9PrPt Fran
Love the song!
I get all chicken skin listening to this.
That is certainly what we're hoping for, thanks for letting us know that we're succeeding. Fran
Wow, wonderful arrangement, love it.
Aloha Mike, so great to hear from you. How have you been? Fran
@@franguidry Singing with Na Leo Nahenahe SF chorus, playing slack key and ukulele. We’re doing great. Love to get together when you’re back in California. Come up to wine country?
@@finemc28 We'll see what we can come up with. Glad to hear things are going well. Fran
Lovely song! Thank you very much!
Thanks, I really love this song but I always thought it would be too complicated for me to figure out. Maybe I'm still learning (grin). Actually, the chord changes are very similar to "Pua Lililehua" which I figured out recently so that made "Kipahulu" accessible. Fran
I've picked up your channel on the Reaper forums, maybe a decade ago. Since then, you videos have always been a "surprise 5 minute vacation" for me. Thanks for sharing!
Martin, how nice to hear about a REAPER connection. I've certainly gotten a lot of help from the forum and cut a lot of recordings using REAPER. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Fran

Ah, that's one from back in the day. We used to cat-sit for the folks who lived there, it was a terrific spot. That's still one of my favorite songs and Led loves it too. Fran
@@franguidry I don’t understand, but, it sounds so sweet…..I am surprised you don’t have more followers on youtube
@@jennifers6435 Thanks Jennifer, I guess I don't push very hard for subs. The channel is just for fun and to capture some of Led's magic to share. Fran

Oh my friend! What a way to end a sunny, Myrtle Creek, Or. day! Maui! Got to Kauai but booked Kauai for our 50th anniversary….sadly ended at 47+ years so never got to go! Love to you and your Martin! Beautiful setting! 🏄🏻♂️🇺🇸😎🙏
Thanks, Ken, that Martin is pretty ragged but it still has that iconic sound. Fran

I'm having such a good time when Led and I play together, but it's almost better to hear from all the folks who enjoy these clips. So glad you liked it. Fran
Ya...that one is saved to come back to many times...REALLY good!!
Amazing guys...thank you!
Led had fun figuring that one out and it has become a regular part of his shows and our get-togethers. Fran
Thank you!
You're certainly welcome, Jack. Thanks for your visits and comments. Fran
Nahenahe, good job!
Mahalo Kory, what a fun set of changes and lovely melody. No wonder it became an instant classic. Fran
Inspiring, Fran… Hafa Adai from the Micronesia Blues Society on the island of Guam. Ledward visited us last year, before our typhoon.
Oh yes, Led really enjoyed that visit, and I'm sure folks on Guam enjoyed his mastery of guitar, uke, and vocals. He has such a wonderful stage presence too. Fran
Hi Fran - another beautiful performance and a wonderful setting. Thanks for sharing this delightful music. 👍👏🏻
Aloha, Brian, I sure agree with your opinion of the setting, I was really happy to be able to catch a bit of the gorgeous sky we see nearly every day. Fran
Mahalo again Fran
You're cetainly welcome Mike, thanks for stopping by. Fran
Thank you for sharing this Fran. I have your music on all day. this is another song ill be watching you play as i try to play it myself I can't wait to get back over to the Islands. Aloha from Australia
Tony, I hope the video gives you some clues for playing it. I'm playing G-B7-Eminor-C-G-D7-G then vamp D7-G. Fran
Aloha Fran; beautiful music !
Mahalo John, this song has such a haunting quality and it fits so well on the slack key guitar. Fran
Lovely, thanks Fran.
Thank you, David, I was so happy to capture a bit of the gorgeous sky. Lots of fun to learn this tune too. Fran
Beautiful as usual, thanks your music reminds me of Kakaluu
Aloha, Susan, so nice to hear from you. Fran
Well alrighty then, another wonderfully played tune, great job on the visuals. BTW, my little dog Lucky loves when I play some Fran and some Led and Fran.
We love to make the doggies happy! Thanks Robert. Fran
A little steel guitar would accompany this well. Thanks for sharing Fran.
I agree, I know a couple of steelers but they are too busy to get together. I do have one clip in the collection with a steel player who was visiting from Seattle. Fran
Great tune Fran! My wife and I just got home from a Honolulu visit but a couple of days before we left we saw a poster that had Led on it. Some festival he is playing at on the 31st. And we were bummed because it would've been fun to see that live! ❤
That will be the 42nd annual slack key festival on O`ahu, it should be a blast but it's four hours so it's a pretty good commitment. I hope your visit was great otherwise. Fran
great rendition !

Thank you James, so glad you enjoyed the tune. Fran
So beautiful... Hana Hou!
I sure hope we will get another clip or two before our visit ends. Then we'll have more chances when Led comes to California. Fran
Love this playing so much. It‘s for me a perfect match describe this place. Sitting here far away in Germany, can‘t wait sit outside at Kalapawai and enjoy a coffee. All I need
Since this video was shot there have been big changes at the park with major construction now going on for over a year. Here's the video I shot last year: ruclips.net/video/0zbNqYJpXhQ/видео.html Happily the Kalapawai Market is still staying in business. Fran

Hi Fran - another wonderful performance. You and Led just blend together so well - a real treat. Great scenery too. Thanks for sharing this beamusic 👏🏻👍

Aloha to you both!! another beautifully played master piece. I always enjoy the bit of history that you include in every post. In my mind, it shows the respect you have for the music and the Artists. Great job on the visuals🤠
As always, thanks for your visits and comments. I also appreciate your visit to the description, there's so much to learn about in Hawaiian music. Fran
Beautiful :) Thanks for sharing this great music with us. As always, a pleasure to listen to you two playing. Have a good week :) Aloha
Aloha, it's a pleasure to be able to share these tunes with you and with other people who appreciate them. Fran
Soothing, thanks for capturing and sharing all of these slices of serenity.
Thank you, I think slack key is one of the few musical styles that aim for that feeling of calm and comfort - nahenahe it is called. Fran
Flat beautiful! Oh how the beauty of the island history shines through your gifts! Once more, ALOHA from Oregon! 🏄🏻♂️😁🤗❤️🇺🇸
In all my slack key playing and recording I'm hoping to bring more people to this lovely style and this rich culture. Ledward is also creating a record of the sounds he heard growing up in Kalapana. I think his playing could only have developed as it did in a total family immersion. Fran
@@franguidry Let me know where to get CD’s! 😄🎶🎶🎶🏄🏻♂️❤️🇺🇸
Beautiful. Puts me in mind of the tropics. Wonderful interplay between the two of you as always.
That sweet sound of the tropics, yes it's definitely in there. Led can bounce all around the guitar but still make it relaxing and comfortable Fran
You guys just delight the ears, mind, and soul! Thank you!
How very nice of you, thanks. The whole thing is for our fun, but it's very satisfying to be sharing the fun with others and also to be capturing some of Led's magic for future fans. Fran
What a delightful performance, hearing you two laugh at the end was the cherry on top!
Sometimes the laugh at the end is because we managed to end together. Sometimes it's because we _didn't_ end together (grin). And often it's because Ledward has found some new treat on his guitar and enjoyed sharing it. Fran
Thank you for the sweet, gently swaying music.
It's always fun to see and hear how Led is going to phrase a song when we play together. Sometimes it's bouncy, sometimes kind of swinging, sometimes liquid and smooth, but always sweet and satisfying. Fran
Delightful! What a Sunday treat. You two really have such joy in your playing. Outstanding!
Aloha Linda, yes it's all about the fun first of all, and being able to share it just makes it better. Fran
